Word has come down from corporate - everyone at the Scranton branch will be laid off at the end of the week! Michael also gets word that some employees from the branch will be promoted to corporate post-layoff. But, because of company policy, Michael wasn't told who received the promotions. Being Michael, he concludes that if he finds a person who was promoted and fires them, he'll get promoted instead and then he can save the Scranton crew from being laid off. Also being Michael, all signs of being promoted currently point to Toby.
